When I was a kid my favorite comic strips were “Fox Trot” and “For Better or For Worse” for some unknown reason. I generally avoided “Judge Parker” and “Mary Worth” - the storylines too dramatic, the drawings too Lichtenstein-esque.

Marmaduke, however, is the only comic I hate with a passion and this worries me because he’s meant to be just a well-meaning, albeit clumsy (in a lovable kinda way) dog. I like dogs. I hate Marmaduke.

Remember the scene in the remake of “The Parent Trap” where the California dad books a flight on the Concorde, consequently beating the English mom back to London even though her flight left HOURS earlier than his?

Well, he could have made even better time had he booked a flight on one of these.

The Reaction Engines A2 is a design study for a hypersonic airliner that not only flies at Mach 5+ but is also environmentally friendly. Developers say passengers could fly from Paris to New York City in just about 96 minutes. The cost of a ticket is intended to be business class level.

The Change Blindness Experiment.

This brings me back to my Psych 1 days. When I watch videos such as this one I tend to think “C’mon, there’s no way I would fall for that.”

I believe the proper psychological term would be “denial.”

I used to take such joy in covering my textbooks in high school. Such acts made me excited about the year ahead and gave me a sense of purpose. “I am a high school student capable of covering my textbooks.”

These are much more attractive than the paper bags I used from the grocery store year after year.

A map of Laurel Canyon (ink on architectural linen) from the series Pocket Walks. Laurel Canyon Boulevard by Gabrielle Ferrer, on view starting Saturday, December 12 as part of the show “All Time Greatest” at the FOCA Gallery in Los Angeles.

With the curator repositioned as fan or enthusiast, artists were selected out of an admiration for or curiosity about their musical knowledge and tastes. The center of the gallery will feature a turntable and record collection composed of each artist’s chosen “all time greatest” album. Visitors are welcome to thumb through and listen to the records. The pairing of visual art and music emphasizes the temporal dimension of viewing, and comfortable seating will invite visitors to spend extended time with the works on display. Against the culture of rapid digital file sharing, All Time Greatest uses the exhibition format as an opportunity to revive an analog, old-school approach to sharing music at the same time that it adapts the fan culture of audiophiles to the task of the curator.

Ferrer’s series also includes a soft-ground etching (on a plate that she kept in her pocket while walking Laurel Canyon Boulevard); a 35mm photograph taken on the walk; and a Judee Sill song letterpress. Really smart; really beautiful. Other works here.

Watching these four minutes makes up for the 10 I wasted attempting to watch a full episode of Jersey Shore. Try as I might, I just couldn’t get through the whole thing. Maybe there’s hope for me after all!

The story of the man who stuck his head inside a particle accelerator.

As a 36 year old researcher at the Institute for High Energy Physics in Protvino, Anatoli Bugorski used to work with the largest Soviet particle accelerator, the synchrotron U-70. On July 13, 1978, Bugorski was checking a malfunctioning piece of equipment when an accident occurred due to failed safety mechanisms.

Bugorski was leaning over the piece of equipment when he stuck his head in the part through which the proton beam was running. Reportedly, he saw a flash “brighter than a thousand suns”, but did not feel any pain. The beam measured about 2000 gray when it entered Bugorski’s skull, and about 3000 gray when it exited after colliding with the inside of his head inflicting about five hundred times the presumed lethal dose.

Dazzle camouflage, also known as Razzle Dazzle or Dazzle painting, was a camo paint job used on ships extensively during WWI and, to a lesser extent, in WWII.

Dazzle did not conceal the ship but made it difficult for the enemy to estimate its type, size, speed and heading. The idea was to disrupt the visual rangefinders used for naval artillery. Its purpose was confusion rather than concealment.
